OUTLINE
I. Indications
A. Measurement of urine output.
B. Retrograde flushing of urethral stones.
C. Whenever an indwelling urinary catheter is needed.
II. Equipment
A. Closed-ended tomcat catheter.
1. Closed end is atraumatic.
2. Catheter has a curved shape.
III. Placement
A. The patient is heavily sedated or anesthetized.
B. Position patient in ventral recumbency over a sandbag with legs slightly spread and the body completely symmetrical.
C. Use alcohol to flatten hair around vulva.
D. Hold lubricated catheter with the curve pointing downward.
E. Spread vulva with fingers, place catheter on the exact center of the floor of the vaginal vestibule, and slide it downward.
