Waltham Centre for Pet Care and Nutrition

WALTHAM is The World’s Leading Authority on Pet Care and Nutrition®. Veterinarians all over the world have relied on Waltham for nutritional expertise for nearly 60 years. Waltham is renowned for its research into nutritional requirements and its knowledge of companion animal nutrition. Hundreds of scientists from diverse fields are involved in the research and development of programs that support and advance our knowledge of pet nutrition, ultimately leading to the development of innovative products. The research is carried out at the Waltham Centre for Pet Care and Nutrition, at Waltham and Royal Canin facilities around the world, and in collaboration with universities and research institutes.

The Waltham Centre for Pet Care and Nutrition was established over 30 years ago to support the Mars Pet Care Companies. The Waltham Centre is home to over 250 dogs, over 600 domestic cats and some 250 birds. Caring science is the philosophy at the heart of Waltham research.

Waltham is committed to conducting its research without causing any physical or psychological stress. Our dogs and cats are treated as pets and our research facilities emulate the home environment to ensure that our scientists obtain the highest standard research data possible.

Particular emphasis is placed on providing canine or feline companionship and a high degree of human-pet interaction. Thus, Waltham pets may be regarded as closely representative of pets in society and the high-quality data generated by studies at the Centre may be directly applied to companion pets in the domestic situation.
The primary interest of the Centre is to conduct research in areas of nutritional requirements and behavior of small companion pets, and is aimed at determining the factors that will enhance pet health and quality of life.

The broad scope of the Centre’s work is served by a diverse professional staff, which includes experts in veterinary medicine, nutrition, biochemistry, behavior, physiology, food science, computer technology and pet husbandry. An important adjunct to the expertise of Waltham is its contact and collaboration with other experts in universities, research institutes and government bodies. Collaboration between such peer groups is synergistic and serves to amplify the quality and breadth of research work that can be undertaken. The results of such collaborative studies are invariably published or used as the subject matter for the worldwide program of Waltham symposia to further exchanges of information. Waltham and Royal Canin have published over 1,000 papers in international journals that cover nutrition, companion pet behavior and veterinary science. An independent literature search (ASLIB) confirmed that Waltham has produced more scientific papers on pet nutrition than any other pet food company. In addition, Waltham research has been cited in the most recent editions of the National Research Council’s Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Nutrient Requirements of Cats more often than all the other pet food manufacturers combined.
